Real wealth is in gut health!
As an Integrative Health Consultant, I can offer tons of tips that the average person could utilize to improve their wealth but without knowing more about the individual, I can’t give proper advice that’s suitable for their bio-individual needs. The essentials of one’s childhood, like upbringing and diet all the way through their current lifestyle is helpful but to give them the most insight, I want to show them tangible metrics that help them identify what’s imbalanced.
About a year into my own journey of leading a more conscious, health-oriented life, I stumbled across the term food intolerance, as opposed to food allergy. With over 20 years of experiencing gut related issues and a growing inspiration to explore all of the intricacies of gut health, it was critical for me to have a better understanding of how I and others could improve something so simple, yet profound. After looking into the different types of tests, I decided to go with the Food Sensitivity Test by Everlywell, which was an at-home lab kit. The process was super simple and didn’t take long, with the results back in a week! While I was curious about the spontaneous encounters with cheese, I was shocked to see how many normal foods in my diet were causing me strife. What’s crazy is most of us have likely lived for years with seemingly non-related symptoms from a food intolerance!
Food allergy or food intolerance?!
While the signs and symptoms closely overlap the differences between the two are extremely important! Food allergies are more of an immediate immune response and can be life threatening, even at small amounts. Food intolerances/sensitivities are generally less serious, can develop a reaction up to 72 hours after consumed and are stemmed specifically from the digestive system. Because of this, it can be problematic discovering what is responsible for the reaction.
Are you aware that your body has different types of immune responses? As you may know, the immune system prevents, controls and protects the body from potential risks by recognizing and responding to foreign invaders. This complex and amazing network of cells and organs is constantly striving to eradicate imbalances in the body but every now and then its pursuit of excellence is disrupted.
As intelligent as it is, the immune system lacks the ability to distinguish between pathogenic antigens and the antigenic molecules found in certain foods we eat.
When our body senses a threat, it creates antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins, that are uniquely crafted to recognize and bind to specific antigens so that other cells can spot it and neutralize it (and sometimes the antibody handles it by itself). Separated into 5 different isotypes (IgM, IgA, IgE, IgD, IgG) the Immunoglobulin G accounts for roughly 75% of total antibodies and is the primary antibody-based defense against pathogens. IgG also happens to be the isotype that is measured in a food sensitivity test so make sure that’s what you’re measuring if you do seek out a test.
For instance, if you have an intolerance to bananas, it’s because your immune system, for whatever reason, has marked it’s molecular structure, separate from other foods, as a threat. Upon consuming said food, little immunoglobulin G warriors rush to the antigenic molecules in or emanating from that banana, and because it can take anywhere from 24-72 hours to fully digest our food the symptoms can be misleading. This source of intestinal inflammation presents itself in issues ranging from migraines, to bloating, indigestion, fatigue as well as in our skin. Eating these foods can lead to systemic inflammation, which is essentially chronic, low-grade inflammation throughout the whole body. Overtime, this persistent immune response is known to play a role in the development of chronic diseases.
I’m passionate about sharing these tips with others because I know firsthand how my life has changed since I’ve been more in tune with my body after consuming certain foods. Once you have this awareness, it’s hard to turn it off.. it’s truly bittersweet!! After you transition the reactive foods out of your diet, your tolerance to them declines and anytime you come across them again, you know immediately! It’s as if you were numb to the dysbiosis that it had been creating in you for years. On the bright side, crowding out harmful foods not only eliminates the adverse reactions but subbing them for better ingredients gives your body/mind/soul the true support it needs to be euflorious.
For many, the idea of changing, or restricting, their diet can be overwhelming. Please, do not feed into the negative energy of scarcity. There are tons of different foods to incorporate into your plate and the transition doesn’t take long. It will likely be a challenge as some foods will have a physiological response as you ween off of them, along with the fact that it can take up to 6 different times of tasting something to adapt it’s flavor to your palate! After reminding yourself that you are disciplined and deserving of this change, you simply need to know where to start. What are you sensitive to? Whether you create a food journal and track your foods and feelings for a few weeks or you invest in a food sensitivity test, you will be rewarded with valuable information that you can use to improve your well-being.
